Role
of Baxter Dialyzers in Patient Deaths
is Investigated
The deaths of fifty-one kidney dialysis
patients around the world are being
investigated to determine whether
or not a defect in Baxter International's
dialysis filters played a role. No
definitive link has yet been established,
but the company issued a precautionary
recall
of its A and AX series dialyzers
as the number of potential cases increased.
The United States Food and Drug Administration
is partnering with foreign ministers
from Croatia, Spain, Taiwan, and Colombia,
where the other deaths have occurred,
in an attempt to determine whether
a problem with Baxter's filters is
at fault. Click here to read more...

Permanently Ceases Manufacture of
Several Dialyzers
After more than fifty deaths around
the world were linked to the use of
Baxter International's kidney dialysis
filters, the company issued a voluntary
recall of it's A and AX series
dialyzers in an attempt to protect
patients while the investigation was
underway. Preliminary findings indicate
that the problem may have been a fluid
that was used in the manufacturing
process. Further tests are still pending.
Baxter announced recently that it
is no longer going to make or sell
its A, AF, and AX series dialyzers.
The decision is permanent, but no
shortage of dialyzers is expected
in its wake. Click here to read more...
Possible
Cause of Patient Deaths Found
Baxter
announced on November 5, 2001 that
a processing fluid used in its Ronneby,
Sweden factory might have contributed
to the deaths of more than 30 patients
who used its dialyzers. Having already
issued a recall of the filters, Baxter
has now decided to discontinue the
production of its A, AF, and AX dialyzers. Click here to read more...

Hopes to Learn from Investigations
As
the Croatian government conducts an
investigation into the deaths of 21
dialysis patients, Baxter International
has expressed its intense interest
in their findings. Cooperating with
both the Food and Drug Administration
and TUV Product Service in the United
States, Baxter has professed its continued
commitment to the safety of those
who use its products. The company
has issued a voluntary recall of the
dialysis filters in question. Click here to read more...
